Elementary Ed SIG Update: Poetry Contest & More

By Angie Remigio

The first Elementary SIG Meeting for this academic year took place on October 13, 2018 during the Fall Mini-Convention. Topics discussed in the meeting included: the 15th Annual Poetry Contest, new requirements under ESSA for English learner equity, Assets-Based Mindset, co-teaching, Seal of Biliteracy, and parent involvement. The members in attendance would like to create a network of EL teachers to collaborate and share ideas across districts. Opportunity to work with an artist to expose students to art from different cultures is available; please contact me for information. Future topic of discussion: Practical ways to support our students given the political climate. The book Supporting English Learners in the Reading Workshop by Lindsey Moses was raffled.

Thank you to those who attended. All materials to support students to write their poetry can be downloaded from the website: https://www.itbe.org/elementary_poetry_contest.php

The poetry contest will take place on February 22, 2019 during the ITBE Spring Convention. The deadline to submit poetry is January 7, 2019. Don’t delay—start writing poetry!
