Adult Ed SIG Corner

Hi. My name is Joseph Hester. This is my 4th year on the ITBE Board as Awards Chair and my first year as Adult Education SIG Co-Chair with Marcia Luptak. I work as a full-time Adult ESL Instructor at the College of Lake County. In this brief article, I’d like to recap what took place during the Adult Education SIG meeting at our Fall Workshop this year.

The attendants began by taking a poll about the role they served in the adult education field. Then, we gave an overview of the SIG’s purpose and the role of the SIG Chair: The Adult Ed SIG is a chance for members in the field to meet and discuss current issues relevant to the field. The role of the SIG chair is to both give information to and gather feedback from the members, report this to other state agencies, and to advocate for the group at the local, state, and national level.

For our main activity, we broke up into discussion groups focusing on the 6 Principles for Exemplary Teaching of English Learners. Information can be found on the TESOL website: https://www.tesol.org/the-6-principles/the-6-principles Members had a great time meeting other professionals in the field and sharing how we are applying the principles in our work.

Finally, we collected information from our members to inform our meeting at the convention in February and other potential activities for the year. If you didn’t do so, we encourage you to fill out this survey to let us know what is important to you: https://forms.gle/SDGRFARYXRqMJEEK9

We look forward to serving you. Please feel free to reach out with any suggestions or questions regarding the Adult Education SIG.
