Adult Ed SIG Corner

By Joseph Hester

Hi. My name is Joseph Hester. This is my 5th year on the ITBE Board and 2nd year as the Adult Ed SIG Co-chair with Marcia Luptak. In this brief article, I’d like to recap what took place during the Adult Education SIG meeting at our 2022 Fall Workshop.

We began by explaining the role of the SIG and SIG chairs. SIG stands for Special Interest Group and provides a chance for members in the field to meet and discuss current issues relevant to the field. The SIG chair or chairs listen to, advocate for, and provide relevant updates to the field.

Following this brief explanation, we gave a brief presentation entitled, “Using Social Emotional Learning (SEL) to Create an Inviting Learning Environment.” In our presentation, we discussed how SEL relates to the different levels on Maslow’s Hierarchy for Self-Actualization, especially to the needs of Safety and Security, Love and Belonging, and Self-Esteem, all needs which we can address in our classrooms. Next, we discussed 5 areas of SEL, Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision-Making. Examples of activities that address SEL were given. Then, we divided members up into groups to discuss how we are already meeting students' SEL needs and one thing we could apply to our teaching to better support it. A couple of resources were given at the end of the presentation.
