2015 – The year for advocacy for English language learners

Yurimi Grigsby, ITBE Advocacy Chair

The Lunar New Year will bring the Year of the Sheep, but it shouldn't be a quiet one for English learners. As education budget cuts continue to affect all students, teachers of English learners will continue to face a shortage of resources while also facing the public’s misconceptions about ELs and language learning in general.

In the book, Advocating for English Learners (Corwin Press, 2014), former educator Diane Staehr Fenner discusses ways to integrate promising practices into your instruction and advocate for your ELs by:
  • Facilitating communication with EL families
  • Implementing creative approaches to encourage EL family participation
  • Ensuring ELs have a voice in school policy
  • Being knowledgeable about effective practice and assessment for ELs
  • Helping ELs and their families build their advocacy capacity
2015 is a great year for advocacy! Find ways to elevate and advocate for your ELs at your school and in your community.
