My path to TESOL and bilingual education wasn’t something I planned from the start—it was something I grew into. I started my career as a biology teacher in Ukraine, teaching middle school students. But when I moved to the U.S., everything changed. I had to start over, learning a new language, a new education system, and a new way of life. That experience shaped me in ways I never expected. I realized how hard it can be to navigate school in a new language, and I knew I wanted to help students going through the same thing.

Now, I teach first grade in a Russian bilingual program in District 21, Buffalo Grove. My students are learning to read, write, and think in two languages, and I love watching them grow more confident every day. Beyond teaching, I also support newcomer families, helping them understand the school system and find their place in the community. I know from my own experience how important that kind of support is.

Right now, I’m working toward my Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on ESL/Bilingual Education and Math. The Graduate Award I received has made a huge difference, allowing me to continue my studies while teaching full-time. My goal is to become a stronger educator for my students and to find better ways to support bilingual learners.

In the next year, I hope to refine my teaching and continue helping newcomer families adjust. In a few years I’d love to be involved in curriculum development for bilingual programs. I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had so far, and I’m excited to keep growing and making a difference in the field.
