Innovative Learning Partnerships for Professional Growth

Reflection can play a key role in professional development. Learn how to partner with your inner performer and draw from your non-academic work experiences. Your teaching can also be strengthened through partnerships with other teachers. What forms of professional collaboration are possible? This webinar will inspire ideas for professional growth and look at ways we can make use of technology to maximize our impact as teachers.

Jennifer Lebedev began teaching English as a foreign and second language in 1996. In 2007, she made the move to online teaching, first through videomaking and later in virtual classrooms. Her YouTube channel English with Jennifer has over three hundred thousand subscribers worldwide, and as JenniferESL she was recognized in the YT 2011 On the Rise contest. As an ELT blogger on WordPress, Jennifer received the 2010 EDDIE Award in the category of ESL Website Blog.

An active member of TESOL, especially within the Materials Writers IS, she has presented at the international and regional levels. She also served as a member of the TESOL Book Publications Committee from March 2011 to March 2014.  Her experience in publishing includes co-authoring the Vocabulary Power series, writing test materials for New Password, and contributing to Pearson’s new hybrid series Next Generation Grammar, for which she also appears as the video Grammar Coach.

Building Bridges: Transitioning Adult ESL Students to College-Level Composition

This session details a collaboration between faculty in Adult ESL and English Composition at a community college. The result is a learning community that transitions advanced ESL students to college-level coursework by supporting both their academic and affective needs. The presentation will include activities used to support this transition.

Project Based Activities to Extend Classroom Learning 

Project-based learning is a natural way for adult ESL and EL/Civics students to apply new language skills in contextualized and authentic ways. This session will present sever- al engaging and adaptable ideas for group and individual student projects, suitable for all skill levels, that will extend learning beyond the classroom.

Laurie Martin has worked in adult education for more than 25 years. She presents workshops and develops online professional development for teachers in Illinois.
