The newsletter is a publication of Illinois Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages Bilingual Education, a non-profit professional organization, founded in 1970, which disseminates information, provides a forum, and serves as an advocate for students, educators and administrators in the field. Illinois TESOL- BE is an affiliate of TESOL, an international organization. All our articles come from professionals in the field, typically from our membership. We encourage article submissions from our entire membership from all levels of experience and areas of expertise.

Call for Submissions for the Fall Issue - September 30, 2015

ITBE welcomes submissions on all topics that would be relevant and useful to its members in Illinois. Please focus your submission on one of the following categories:

Feature Articles: Useful classroom practices, administrative issues, classroom-based research, perspectives and commentary on trends or innovations in the field
Please include headings and graphics (photos and videos) where applicable
Length: 700-1500 words

Teaching Tips: Shorter teaching tips or lesson ideas.(These articles should describe concrete activities with specific directions and guidelines which readers can implement into their teaching. They should also be written up in prose, rather than a lesson plan format.)
Please include headings and graphics (photos and videos) where applicable
Length: 500-700 words

Book and Resource Reviews: Reviews of textbooks, professional development books, and other resources (print or online) that you have found useful and would recommend to others
Please include description, critique, and possible applications
Length: 300-500 words

All articles must:
  • Be double-spaced
  • Include the category (Feature, Teaching Tip, Review, or News) in the document itself
  • Include title and any necessary headings/subheading
  • Include a one-sentence bio statement (eg, "John Smith teaches adult ESL at Village Community College.")
  • Not exceed length specifications of the category (Feature, Teaching Tip, Review, or News)
  • Follow APA Style, 6th Edition for in-text citation and reference list (see APA Style Guide)
  • Place any images and video in the text itself in order to show correct placement
  • Use only one space between sentences
Also please note that the Link is purely in electronic format and therefore, formatting is somewhat restricted in width and a single page. For instance, if you use footnotes, they will be at the bottom of the article.

To submit articles, please:
  • Email manuscript as a Microsoft Word document (.doc or .docx) attachment to news@itbe.org; subject: "Submission for ITBE Link" (you need this EXACT subject line to avoid the spam filter)
  • Images: In addition to including them on the Word doc in the place you'd like them to appear, please attach them as separate .jpg files and attach with the email.
  • Video: Clips can be embedded - Please include either the URL from a site that provides the embedding code (eg, Youtube) or include the embedding code itself
  • Include a photo of each author (optional)
Review Process:
Authors will receive notification that your submission has been received within one week. The review of all articles will take place within one to two weeks after the close of the call for submissions. The editor and two to three reviewers will decide whether or not the article is appropriate for inclusion in the issue. Authors will be notified by email of the status of their article.

The editors reserve the right to modify any material selected for publication to fit the available space, or to improve on clarity and style. Authors will be consulted prior to publication if changes are deemed by the editors to be substantial. Authors may be given the opportunity to revise their articles if significant changes or refocusing are required. However, authors will not be able to make changes to their manuscript after submission. Articles may be held for upcoming issues.

Once the issue has been formatted, authors will be sent a link to their article as a proof. This will allow opportunity for minor formatting issues to be resolved (e.g. a missing line space, or a word that was supposed to be italicized). Please note that no content or stylistic changes can be made to the article after it has been accepted for publication and formatted.
