Adult Education SIG Chair
Cathy McCabe

Cathy McCabe became interested in teaching Adult ESL after volunteering with the Literacy Volunteers of America. She was inspired to return to school and completed a B.A. in English at Northern Illinois University in 2004. She has been teaching Adult ESL at the College of DuPage for a little more than eight years now. Since completing her M.A. in Linguistics/TESOL at Northeastern Illinois University in 2010, she has also been teaching in the Intensive English Program at Harper College. She is very interested in course planning and curriculum development and is currently working on an Action Research Project on the topic. She looks forward to meeting and networking with new colleagues in Adult ESL as Chair for the Adult Ed SIG.

Lisa Barrett

Lisa Barrett received her B.A. in English from Elmhurst College and her M.A.E.D. in adult education/curriculum and instruction from University of Phoenix. Lisa is an ESL instructor at Computer Systems Institute in Skokie and Midwestern Career College in Chicago. She is also a part-time language coach for Rosetta Stone and a part-time writing tutor. This is her first year as SIG leader for higher ed.

Lila Birchfield

Lila Birchfield recently retired after a 33 year career as a high school French, Spanish, and ELL Teacher/Coordinator. Presently, she works as an adjunct instructor in the NNL program at Harper College. SIG chair of Secondary Ed for the last 2 years, Lila has also organized many excursions to Europe for high school students.

Margaret Gigous

Margaret Gigous earned her degree in Elementary Education at Trinity International University. She received her Master's Degree in TESOL from Wheaton College Graduate School in 2002. Margaret is a Sheltered 4th grade teacher in Villa Park School District #45. In addition, she works as an adjunct faculty member at National Louis University.
